This coming Sunday, our worship service will take a different form than usual. Rather than a traditional service with hymns, sermon, and liturgy, we will gather for a Taizé service.
Taizé worship takes its name from the small Christian community of Taizé in France. During the Second World War, Brother Roger, a young Swiss Christian, established a community devoted to reconciliation, prayer, and peace. Over the decades, people from around the world began traveling to Taizé to pray together. Today, thousands of pilgrims—especially young adults—continue to visit each year.
The worship that developed there is simple but profound. Rather than lengthy sermons or complex music, Taizé services rely on repeated chants, scripture readings, silence, and prayer. The repetition is intentional. Instead of trying to teach us something new every few minutes, Taizé allows a simple phrase, scripture verse, or prayer to settle into the heart. Taizé asks us to slow down. Rather than asking, “What comes next?” the service invites us to remain present to what is happening now.
One of the gifts of Taizé is silence. Silence can be uncomfortable because it leaves us alone with our thoughts, worries, hopes, and prayers. Yet throughout Scripture, God often speaks not through noise and spectacle but through stillness. Elijah encountered God not in the wind, earthquake, or fire, but in a "sound of sheer silence" (1 Kings 19:12).
The Christian life requires both action and contemplation. We are called to serve, to love, to work for justice, and to share the gospel. Yet we are also called to stop, listen, and rest in God's presence. Taizé reminds us that faith is not only something we do; it is also a relationship we inhabit.
My hope is that this service will offer each of us an opportunity to step away from the noise of daily life and rediscover the quiet presence of God. In your prayers now and through this weekend, I invite you also to lift up all of those clergy and laity who are meeting the California Nevedah Annual Conference Session in Sacramento.
