Different Kinds of Hunger

A different kind of hunger

I hope to meet one-on-one with every member of our congregation now through the end of the year for a one-on-one conversation “Journey Talk”. There isn't much of an agenda beyond hearing your story, praying together, and wondering how God is at work in your life.
As I've been thinking about those conversations, one thought keeps coming back to me:
People are hungry.
Not just for food, though that certainly matters (As I write this, I am very hungry for lunch). We hunger for hope when life feels uncertain. We hunger for purpose when we're asking, "What's next?" We hunger for friendship in a lonely world, for forgiveness after we've stumbled, for peace when anxiety won't let go, we hunger to leave a legacy, and for belonging in a culture that often leaves people feeling unseen.
Some of those hungers are met in our relationship with God. In prayer we find peace. In worship we are reminded of hope. In Christ we discover grace, forgiveness, and the assurance that we are deeply loved.
Other hungers are met through one another. A shared meal. A listening ear. A handwritten note. A prayer. A ride to an appointment. A hug after worship.  Someone remembering our name. God often chooses to care for people through ordinary acts of kindness offered by ordinary disciples.
Perhaps that's one of the Church's greatest callings—not simply to talk about God's love, but to become one of the ways people experience it.
Let  me leave you with two small assignments for the week:
First: Sign up for a Journey Talk. The sign-up sheet is in the Sanctuary, and I'd love the opportunity to spend about 45 minutes together sometime this fall.
Second: Pay attention to hunger—your own and someone else's. What are you hungry for? And who around you might be hungry for hope, friendship, encouragement, or simply someone willing to listen?
Grace and peace,
Pastor M@
