Coming Soon: Annual Leadership Nominations

Aug 11, 2026

Over the next few weeks, we'll begin our annual process of identifying and electing leaders to serve in the ministries of Sonoma United Methodist Church. Before the Nominations and Leadership Development Committee begins its work, I'd like to introduce the committees and leadership roles that help guide the life of our congregation.
The groups and roles listed below are those for which the Nominations Committee helps identify and recommend leaders. They are only part of the ministry of Sonoma UMC—many other ministries, teams, and volunteer opportunities help make our church the vibrant community it is.

  • Church Council - Provides overall leadership and direction for the church by coordinating our ministries and making decisions that support our mission. One unique feature of Sonoma UMC is that every church member has both voice and vote at Church Council meetings and may submit agenda items for consideration.

  • Finance Committee - Oversees the church's finances, develops the annual budget, and helps ensure our financial resources are managed faithfully and responsibly.

  • Staff-Parish Relations Committee (SPRC) - Supports and encourages the pastor and staff, oversees personnel policies and evaluations, and works with the District Superintendent during times of pastoral transition.

  • Board of Trustees - Cares for the church's buildings, grounds, and other physical assets while also serving as the church's legal entity.

  • Nominations and Leadership Development Committee - Prayerfully identifies, encourages, and recommends leaders who can faithfully serve the congregation in its many ministries.

  • Worship Committee - Works with the pastor, musicians, and worship leaders to plan meaningful, welcoming, and Christ-centered worship throughout the year.

  • Treasurer - Oversees the church's financial accounts, provides regular financial reports, and works closely with the bookkeeper and Financial Secretary.

  • Financial Secretary - Receives and records financial contributions, maintains confidential giving records, and prepares annual giving statements.

  • Lay Leader - Serves as the primary lay representative of the congregation, encouraging spiritual growth and supporting the church's ministries alongside the pastor.

  • Lay Delegate - Represents Sonoma UMC at the California-Nevada Annual Conference Session (ACS), participating in the work and decision-making of the wider United Methodist Church.

  • Alternate Lay Delegate - Attends Annual Conference Session (ACS) and serves in place of the Lay Delegate when called upon.

  • Sunshine School Advisory Board - Provides guidance and support for the ministry of Sunshine School while strengthening the partnership between the preschool and the church.

  • Parish Partners - Serve as the connection between Sonoma UMC and Parish Partners, helping coordinate communication and shared ministry.

If you'd like to learn more about any of these committees or leadership roles, I'd love to talk with you. I invite you to begin praying about where God may be calling you to serve, and to keep the work of the Nominations and Leadership Development Committee in your prayers.
Of course, these are far from the only ways to serve. Sonoma UMC is blessed with many ministries that welcome participation, including:  Dynamic Garden Crew, Thursday Small Group, Blessing Bags, Knitters, Quilters, Thursday Walks, Women's Social, United Methodist Men, New Wine Ringers, Moms Group, Adult Education, Tech Team, Musicians, and our many special events. Ministry happens in countless ways, and there is a place for every gift God has given.
Grace and peace,
Pastor M@
